Frequently Asked Questions about Wineries

Help & FAQ for Wine Makers
1. What are the main steps in the winemaking process?

The winemaking process involves several key steps:

  1. Harvesting – Grapes are picked at the ideal ripeness for flavor and sugar balance.
  2. Crushing & Pressing – Grapes are crushed to release juice; for white wines, skins are removed, while reds ferment with skins.
  3. Fermentation – Yeast is added to convert grape sugars into alcohol, lasting from days to weeks.
  4. Aging & Maturation – Wine is stored in stainless steel tanks or oak barrels to develop flavours.
  5. Bottling & Finishing – The wine is bottled for distribution after filtering, stabilizing, and blending.
2. What is the difference between red, white, and rosé wines?
  • Red wine is made from dark-skinned grapes and ferments with the skins, extracting colour and tannins.
  • White wine is made from white or dark-skinned grapes, but the skins are removed before fermentation, creating a lighter body and colour.
  • Rosé wine gets its pink hue from brief contact with grape skins, typically a few hours, before being pressed off like a white wine.
3. How does aging affect wine?

Aging allows the wine to develop complex flavours and aromas over time. Some wines are aged in oak barrels, which can add vanilla, spice, and toast notes, while others age in stainless steel to retain fresh, fruity flavours. Red wines benefit from aging as tannins soften, while most white wines are best consumed young.

4. What are tannins, and how do they affect wine?

Tannins are natural compounds in grape skins, seeds, and oak barrels. They contribute to a wine’s structure, mouthfeel, and aging potential. High-tannin wines (like Cabernet Sauvignon) can feel drying or astringent on the palate, whereas low-tannin wines (like Pinot Noir) feel smoother and softer.

5. Why do winemakers blend different grape varieties?

Blending allows winemakers to create a balanced, complex wine by combining different grape varieties with complementary flavours, aromas, and structures. For example, Bordeaux blends combine Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot for depth and softness, while GSM blends (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) bring fruitiness, spice, and structure.

How do I find the right tour for me?

If you have a special request, simply contact us directly when booking or send us an inquiry. We’ll do our best to accommodate your needs and create a memorable experience for you.

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suited to the forecasted weather for the area you’re visiting. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are advised, as some wineries have OHS regulations that may restrict access to guests wearing high heels or open-toe footwear. Bringing a light jacket, sunglasses, a broad-brimmed hat, a minimum of 30+ sunblock, and a camera to capture the experience is also a great idea!
